My first project of my Apollo semester had the topic of traditional Chinese herbal medicine. The entire concept of this idea was to explore the old medicine of Chinese culture and see how it worked. But, through my research I found the negative effects on the environment this tradition has caused, and the lack of action taken by the government.

Art
For art I made a painting of a plant used in TCHM. The context was built in the artist's statement by explaining why I chose this plant.
I chose to paint the matricaria aurea as it's a very common herb used in traditional Chinese herbal medicine. While this plant is a flower, I chose to paint it in its bulbed early stages as this is when they tend to be harvested. They are harvested as bulbs because that is when they have the most healing properties as they can be eaten safely like this. The matricaria aurea is mainly used in traditional Chinese herbal medicine to treat stomach pains.

History
Works Cited |
For history I made a newsletter about the effects of TCHM on specific animals and the lack of action taken by the Chinese government. To be specific, I talked about the pangolin, the tokay gecko, some problem/solution, and a little bit of history of traditional Chinese herbal medicine. This builds the context of the animals that are affected by this tradition. I chose to do this because in my research I started to stumble across many articles about the negative effects of this medicinal tradition.
