Project 1, contextualization: Rebirth
I originally started my research with the topic of supernovae. However, as research continued I noticed a trend in my information. Supernovae are widely agreed upon to be the main source of the universe's elements. The way that a star can die, explode, and make new elements turned me towards the idea of rebirth.
My research mainly gave me examples of symbolism for the idea of rebirth. This is when it occurred to me that there was a real symbol of rebirth in our universe that has never been used as symbolism. So, I decided to do that.

Poetry
After finding symbolism in this cosmic event, I had to figure out how to connect it to the idea of rebirth.
I made the connection from rebirth to supernovae through combining supernovae with the most famous symbol of rebirth, the phoenix. This combination was achieved with poetry. I had written several small poems conveying this idea followed by a few large poems that I wasn't a fan of. With some experimentation, I combined my smaller poems and created this piece. |
Painting
In order to connect supernovae to rebirth through painting, I decided to combine it with one of the most commonly used symbols of rebirth. The phoenix.
In order to combine a supernova with a phoenix, I looked to the bright color range found in the largest of supernovae. Replacing the orange flames with purple and pink stardust allowed it to have a completely different context whilst still resembling the original beast. The purpose of this combination was to compare the burn, explode, and create cycle of a supernova to the theme of burn, die, and rebirth that is the phoenix. |
